And finally…here’s a story which sums up everything about the power of investing in Africa- and how it transforms lives as well as bringing good returns.
A few years ago a friend of mine -American student Will Smith -travelled to Liberia where he set up the LEAD Monrovia Football Academy. His business plan was to use the power of sport to drive educational success and train young Africans to become leaders of the future and create positive change in Liberia.
His students- an equal mix of boys and girls- have football coaching in the morning while afternoons are devoted to academic lessons. Now Will’s success is being replicated not just elsewhere in Africa where he’s set up a second Academy in Morocco but also in the USA.
LEAD Activate has set up in Los Angeles as a new venture to provide professional athletes in the States with the training and skills they need to inspire young Americans and affect positive social change in their communities.
LEAN Activate is a perfect example of Africa exporting its talents to the world. It is a textbook example of everything the UK-Africa Investment Summit is seeking to achieve.
By the end of this decade 42% of the world’s youth will be Africans. Projects like this can help transform millions of young lives.
And for good measure the LEAD concept is also pretty successful on the field of play. Last Autumn the Academy’s Under 15 girls travelled to the US and won the Target USA Cup when they beat Vardar United 3-2 in the final.
