Last year I attended a mentoring evening at an inner city London academy school at Elephant and Castle where I was introduced to a talented young woman who was a slam poet.
Her name is Zareen Roy-Macauley and I was so impressed with her that I offered her an internship at my company – Peter Burdin Africa Solutions – where she did some great research while she waited to take up her place at Cambridge University.
Zareen is the very first student from her inner city academy school to go to Cambridge and she’s become a role model for all the students at her school who may be inspired to follow in her footsteps.
I was delighted when Zareen was profiled by the BBC’s World at One programme to demonstrate what it was like for a young person from an ethnic and inner city background to attend the ivory towers of Cambridge.
